5 Style Mistakes You Don’t Realize You’re Making, But She Does

It is probably safe to say that women have a stronger sense of style and fashion than men. Now even though women may notice something with a guy’s appearance and outfit that breaks style rules or just outright does not look good, she may be too polite to point it out. Some style choices may even really irritate or turn off some women, but still, many will be hesitant to say anything about it. Here are five common style mistakes that men make without realizing that they stand out to women.

1. Tall Socks

You may think no one pays attention to or cares about what socks you wear, but women actually hate the way tall socks look on men, especially when you wear them with shorts. Tall socks are acceptable if they are hidden underneath pants, but as soon as shorts come out of hibernation, the ankle socks must follow. Wearing tall socks actually accentuates your legs more, making them appear larger or skinnier. Unless you are playing basketball or going for the old-school knee sock look, stick to short socks. When doubtful if your tall socks make you look like a dummy or not, remember the general principle that women probably think so.

2. Too Long Of A Belt Dick

Belt dick. Definition: The excess part of a belt that you let hang somewhat close to between your legs. This trend has become more prevalent in recent years as D-ring belts became more popular. The idea was initially intended to create a casual and relaxed appearance of holding up men’s pants and letting the rest hang loose. As soon as the extra hanging part became coined as the “belt dick,” it seemed to take on the implication of “the longer, the better,” to men. Women just roll their eyes, seeing it simply as a belt that is too big, and a guy who is trying too hard to make a statement that he looks ridiculous. Remember, less is more. And don’t worry-the size of your belt dick is not an indicator…

3. Clothes That Don’t Fit Your Body Size And Shape.

Some common problems that women notice in men’s clothing choices are clothes that are the wrong size. Men often choose to wear oversized t-shirts and sweatshirts because they want to cover up their small or scrawny frame. This style mistake makes guys actually look smaller because now they appear to be drowning in their clothes. A tighter shirt will actually make a smaller-framed guy look bigger because he will fill it out better.

Another thing that women notice is when guys wear too short of pants (high-waters) or shorts. Pants that graze the ground or just hover a bit above it when wearing shoes are the ideal length. Anything higher than that looks silly, and women do notice it because it irritates them when their own jeans are a bit too short. Shorts are another clothing item that can look pretty ridiculous if they are even just a little too high up the thigh. Women don’t like seeing too much of men’s thighs unless maybe they are tanned and toned… but that’s a whole different story. Just remember to keep your cargo shorts or basketball shorts long enough to cover up the majority of your upper legs and you won’t frighten any ladies off with too much thigh exposure.

4. T-shirts That Are Inappropriate For Your Age

It’s true that T-shirts with sarcastic comebacks, movie quotes, or pick-up lines can be quite amusing when you see them in the store, but you should give a second thought to buying one and bringing it home. Many women see these shirts as corny, immature, or offensive, even though they may laugh at them. A man’s decision to wear a shirt that says, “You looked better on MySpace,” or “I’m not a gynecologist, but I’ll take a look,” makes him feel like he’s got a sense of humor. In reality, women probably are hoping you have had that shirt since 7th grade and just ran out of clean clothes to wear that day. Think about the maturity level you want to portray to women, and then leave it to the middle and high schoolers to flaunt the screen-printed, catch-phrase shirts.

Another major problem with these phrase shirts is that most of them are way overdone. Everyone has seen or heard them all. Unless you can find something truly original and classically hilarious, it is safe to just avoid phrase shirts altogether. They have served their time, and many women will be happy to see you let them go.

5. Not Enough Variety In Your Look

Although it can feel comfortable finding a great style that works for you, it’s very important not to overdo it. Just because you find that one Abercrombie polo, Under Armour shirt, or Celtics basketball sweatshirt that you really like, buying 29 different colors or versions doesn’t make you fashionable for 29 days straight. Some guys might want to play it safe by sticking with the same look that they feel works for them, but women catch on pretty quickly that you may have a problem diversifying your closet. Venture out of your comfort zone a little bit and try something new. Maybe you should consider your sister’s fashion advice after all. You may surprise yourself in finding some new styles that you never considered before. Remember, women are impressed when men know how to look good and how to vary their look.

Women tend to pay close attention to other people’s style choices and habits, and they often have a good sense of what really doesn’t look good on guys, even though it may not seem to be a huge deal to you. What you wear says a lot about you, so how do you want your style to come across? Remember to avoid these 5 common style mistakes that really stand out to women and it will help you prevent being detected by their “What Not to Wear” radar.
